electoral Organizing for Criminal Legal Reform
COURSE LEADERs: Tiffany caban & Divya sundaram
mondays at 8pm et
Throughout the history of the United States, Black people and people of color have been subjected to excessive violence and oppression at the hands of law enforcement and the criminal legal system. While various reforms have been attempted over time, these simply have not been enough to reverse the deep negative impact of the criminal legal system. We do not need reform, we need a reckoning. This course will offer insight into what is meant by the word “abolition” and provide a framework for how to distinguish between reform versus abolition. We will also delve into how we as movement builders can use electoral campaigns as one strategy amongst many to support the goals of abolition, while also uplifting the grassroots organizing and political education that is at the core of our Movement. Through case studies, guest speakers, and candid discussion, participants will leave this course with a firmer understanding of what abolition is and how to build with abolitionist organizers to liberate our communities from the deadly impacts of the prison industrial complex.
